Activity is mediated mainly through the growth hormone secretagogue receptor, now generally called the ghrelin receptor or GHS-R1a. Binding at this G-protein-coupled receptor triggers phospholipase C signaling, calcium mobilization, and release of growth hormone from pituitary somatotrophs. Reports describe less pronounced stimulation of adrenocorticotropic hormone and prolactin compared with earlier secretagogues such as hexarelin or GHRP-6. Selectivity figures vary between assay systems, so the degree of separation from other secretagogues is an area of ongoing comparison rather than a fixed constant.
In animal and early human studies, ipamorelin produces pulsatile growth hormone release and a secondary rise in insulin-like growth factor 1. The magnitude and duration of that rise depend on route, sampling schedule, and the baseline endocrine state of the subject. Whether repeated exposure alters the response over time is not firmly settled, since some reports describe stable pulsatility while others note attenuation. Most published data come from small samples, which limits the strength of any general claim about long-term behavior.
Ipamorelin is a synthetic pentapeptide that belongs to the growth hormone secretagogue class of compounds. Its sequence is Aib-His-D-2-Nal-D-Phe-Lys-NH2, a structure that differs from natural ghrelin in length and in the presence of non-natural amino acid residues. Early laboratory work described it as a comparatively selective agent that stimulates growth hormone release with limited effect on other pituitary hormones. The compound is supplied as a lyophilized solid for research use and has no identified natural source in the body.
Quality claims for research peptides vary widely across suppliers. A certificate of analysis should list purity by chromatography, the mass found by spectrometry, and the analytical conditions used. Independent testing at a third-party laboratory is a common way to check identity and purity, because documents alone cannot confirm what is inside a vial. Purity figures describe the proportion of the target peptide among detected species, and they say nothing about biological activity or sterility.
Lyophilized ipamorelin powder is the form usually supplied for laboratory work. Kept dry, protected from light, and held at minus 20 degrees Celsius or below, it remains stable for extended periods, often measured in years. Once dissolved, the peptide degrades faster through hydrolysis, oxidation, and deamidation, so solutions are typically refrigerated and used within weeks. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles and exposure to alkaline conditions accelerate loss of the parent compound.
Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography is the standard tool for assessing purity. Detection near 214 nanometers captures the peptide backbone, and the resulting chromatogram shows the main peak alongside related impurities. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry confirms molecular mass and supports sequence verification. Common degradation products include oxidized residues, deamidated forms, and truncated fragments, each appearing as a distinct peak or shoulder in the trace.

The compound was developed at Novo Nordisk during the 1990s as part of a programme seeking secretagogues with improved selectivity. It was described in the peer-reviewed literature in 1998 alongside related pentapeptides from the same series. Investigators advanced it because it raised growth hormone output in animal models while leaving other pituitary hormones comparatively unaffected. The development code NNC 26-0161 appears in earlier reports, and ipamorelin later became the common designation in published work.
Selectivity is the property most often attached to this peptide. Published animal and early human studies record increases in growth hormone release after administration, with adrenocorticotropic hormone and cortisol responses remaining small by comparison. Effects on appetite-related pathways also appear weaker than those reported for several earlier secretagogues. Reviews that compare members of the growth hormone secretagogue family cite these findings frequently, though the receptor-level explanation for the selectivity continues to be debated rather than settled.
=== Heart attacks === The relative risk of ischemic cardiac events seen in pre-approval trials of rosiglitazone was similar to that of comparable drugs, but there was increased LDL cholesterol, LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio, triglycerides and weight. In 2005, at the insistence of the World Health Organization, GSK performed a meta-analysis of all 37 trials involving use of rosiglitazone, finding a hazard ratio of 1.29 (0.99 to 1.89). In 2006 the GSK updated the analysis, now including 42 trials and showing a hazard ratio of 1.31 (1.01 to 1.70). A large observational study comparing patients treated with rosiglitizone with patients treated with other diabetes therapies was performed at the same time and found a relative risk of 0.93 (95% C.I. 0.8 to 1.1) for those treated with rosiglitazone. The information was passed to the FDA and posted on the company website, but not otherwise published. GSK provided these analyses to the FDA, but neither the company nor the FDA warned prescribers or patients of the hazard. According to the FDA, the Agency did not issue a safety bulletin because the results of the meta analysis conflicted with those of the observational study and with the results of the ADOPT trial. A meta-analysis in May 2007 reported the use of rosiglitazone was associated with a 1.4 fold increased risk of heart attack and a numerically higher (but non-significant) increase in risk of death from all cardiovascular diseases against control. It contained 42 trials of which 27 were unpublished.
== Obesity == Obesity affects bone mineral density (BMD) and fracture risk. While increased weight may enhance BMD due to mechanical loading, it can also elevate fracture risk at specific skeletal sites. Studies suggest that obesity impacts bone quality, potentially increasing fragility. Magnesium is essential for bone health, contributing to bone formation and maintenance. Lower magnesium intake has been linked to reduced BMD, while higher intake may help protect against fractures, particularly in postmenopausal women. While obesity may increase BMD, body fat distribution and metabolic factors can negatively affect bone quality, potentially raising fracture risk.
Ketamine has been found to increase dopaminergic neurotransmission in the brain, but instead of being due to dopamine reuptake inhibition, this may be via indirect/downstream mechanisms, namely through antagonism of the NMDA receptor. Whether ketamine is an agonist of D2 receptors is controversial. Early research by the Philip Seeman group found ketamine to be a D2 partial agonist with a potency similar to that of its NMDA receptor antagonism. However, later studies by different researchers found the affinity of ketamine of >10 μM for the regular human and rat D2 receptors, Moreover, whereas D2 receptor agonists such as bromocriptine can rapidly and powerfully suppress prolactin secretion, subanesthetic doses of ketamine have not been found to do this in humans and in fact, have been found to dose-dependently increase prolactin levels. Imaging studies have shown mixed results on inhibition of striatal [11C] raclopride binding by ketamine in humans, with some studies finding a significant decrease and others finding no such effect. However, changes in [11C] raclopride binding may be due to changes in dopamine concentrations induced by ketamine rather than binding of ketamine to the D2 receptor.
== As food == Partly in consequence of its size, the giant gourami is a significant food fish, and in its native regions it has been harvested as a customary food source. In Southeast Asian cuisine, gourami is highly valued as food due to its thick flesh, texture and flavour. Unlike carp and milkfish, gouramis do not have fine bones within their flesh, which has increased their market value. In Southeast Asian market, gourami is one of the most highly-valued freshwater food fish. Gourami flesh is rich in protein and minerals. It is a popular food fish in Indonesian, Malaysian and Thai cuisines. Gouramis are particularly popular in Sundanese cuisine of Indonesia, where they often being fried as ikan goreng, grilled as ikan bakar or cooked with spice inside a banana leaf wrap as pepes. In some parts of Southeast Asia, they are salted to preserve and prolong shelf life.

=== Pregnancy === In pregnancy, the vulva and vagina take on a bluish coloring due to venous congestion. This appears between the eighth and twelfth week and continues to darken as the pregnancy continues. Estrogen is produced in large quantities during pregnancy and this causes the vulva to become enlarged. The vaginal opening and the vagina are also enlarged. After childbirth, a vaginal discharge known as lochia is produced and continues for about ten days.
Curd products vary by region and include cottage cheese, curd cheese (both curdled by bacteria and sometimes also rennet), farmer cheese, pot cheese, queso blanco, and paneer. The word can also refer to a non-dairy substance of similar appearance or consistency, though in these cases a modifier or the word 'curdled' is generally used. In Hungary a form of curds called túró is an ingredient in several national dishes, such as túrós palacsinta, túrós csusza and túrógombóc. In 2019, rögös túró—a form that has a unique texture "consisting of clumps of loose lumps reminiscent of cauliflower" (the name translates to "lumpy túró")—was granted the status of Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (TSG) by the EU. In Turkey, curds are called keş and are served on fried bread and are also eaten with macaroni in the provinces of Bolu and Zonguldak. In Sri Lanka, curd is eaten fresh as a dessert since antiquity. Usually buffalo curd cured in clay pots and served with kitul treacle (Caryota urens), is considered a delicacy in almost every part of the island. Although cows milk curd also is produced, Buffalo curd is the preferred variety. In Nepal, curd is produced by souring pasteurized milk with natural micro-flora. The pasteurized milk is added to a container called theki carved out of wood like Daar(Boehmeria Rugulosa). The milk is left for 12–16 hours and the micro-organisms entrapped within the Theki act as inocula. The curd produced after is used to make chhurpi and variations of it. Albanian gjiza is made by boiling whey for about 15 minutes and adding vinegar or lemon.
== Pollution == Selenium pollution might impact some aquatic systems and may be caused by anthropogenic factors such as farming runoff and industrial processes. People who eat more fish are generally healthier than those who eat less, which suggests no major human health concern from selenium pollution, although selenium has a potential effect on humans. Selenium poisoning of water systems may result whenever new agricultural run-off courses through dry lands. This process leaches natural soluble selenium compounds (such as selenates) into the water, which may then be concentrated in wetlands as the water evaporates. Selenium pollution of waterways also occurs when selenium is leached from coal flue ash, mining and metal smelting, crude oil processing, and landfill. High selenium levels in waterways were found to cause congenital disorders in oviparous species, including wetland birds and fish. Elevated dietary methylmercury levels can amplify the harm of selenium toxicity in oviparous species. Selenium is bioaccumulated in aquatic habitats, which results in higher concentrations in organisms than the surrounding water. Organoselenium compounds can be concentrated over 200,000 times by zooplankton when water concentrations are in the 0.5 to 0.8 μg Se/L range. Inorganic selenium bioaccumulates more readily in phytoplankton than zooplankton. Phytoplankton can concentrate inorganic selenium by a factor of 3000. Further concentration through bioaccumulation occurs along the food chain, as predators consume selenium-rich prey.

It is a synthetic pentapeptide in the growth hormone secretagogue family and acts as an agonist at the ghrelin receptor. It is handled as a laboratory research compound rather than a naturally occurring hormone.
Studies generally report growth hormone as the dominant output, with smaller or absent effects on adrenocorticotropic hormone and prolactin. The size of that separation depends on the assay and the dose examined, so it is best described as relative selectivity.
No natural source has been identified, and the molecule is produced by chemical synthesis. Its non-natural residues distinguish it from endogenous ghrelin even though both engage the same receptor.
Keep the powder dry, protected from light, and at minus 20 degrees Celsius or lower. A desiccant and a sealed vial limit moisture uptake. Let the vial reach room temperature before opening to reduce condensation.
